Live counter
Sits in your chat rooms, counts the members’ messages, and every 5 seconds pushes the total to a public channel that every page can show. It never says a word in the rooms.
Works today With @pikoman/ws 1.0.0-rc.10 from npm and Pikoman as it runs now.
A folder that runs as it is, in Node and Python: counter.mjs, counter.py, .env.example, README.md, package.json, page.js, pikoman_bot.py, requirements.txt.
What it does
The bot is a member of each room and hears every chat message. It skips what bots say, by the server’s list of bots, never by what a member writes about itself. The total goes out over HTTP to the public channel status, which pages join as listeners: no token, no member cap. To celebrate the 1 000th message in the room as well, add the milestones bot.
- members
- counter bot
- status
- every page
The key it needs
Rights subscribe and publish, and client_events although it never speaks: in a presence channel only members who may speak get the member list, and the list is what says who is a bot. publish reaches status and the rooms only.

Set up
The docs cover the key and connecting; everything about the bot itself is on this page.
- The Pro plan. A key that joins channels is a bot’s key, and bot keys come with Pro.
- The key above. In the dashboard: your app, New API key, filled in as shown. How each choice works: Keys and rights. The secret,
sk_k_….…, is shown once (what it looks like). - Your app id and the secret in
.env, copied from.env.example. Nowhere else: not in a page, not in git. - Connecting. The bot signs its own join tokens with the key, and Pikoman shows it as a bot: bots in presence channels.
How it works
It joins each room as a bot
With access 3, so it gets the member list and the server’s list of which members are bots.
It counts chat messages
room.clientMessagesees every client event; onlyclient-messagefrom a member that is not a bot counts. Typing indicators and other events do not.It pushes the total
Every 5 seconds, changed or not, so a page opened a moment ago gets a number soon:
rest.publish("status", "total-messages", {total}), one HTTP request signed for itself alone. The page shows it
page.jslistens tostatus. Each open page is one connection of your plan.

These are the files in the zip, as they are: copy one, download one, or take the whole folder.

python counter.pyIdeas to take it further
- Keep the count across restarts: write it to a file every minute and read it at start.
- Count per room and push
{room: count}, for a list of the busiest rooms. - Without a bot at all: the server counts messages per channel, and
GET /channels?info=message_countgives them to a plain script: numbers without a bot. - Celebrate milestones in the room: the milestones bot.
