Timer bot

!timer 5m Coffee, and in five minutes the room hears “⏰ Ada: Coffee”. Stand-ups, breaks and game rounds, kept by a bot instead of a browser tab.

Works today With @pikoman/ws 1.0.0-rc.10 from npm and Pikoman as it runs now.

Download timer-bot.zip

A folder that runs as it is, in Node and Python: timer.mjs, timer.py, .env.example, README.md, package.json, pikoman_bot.py, requirements.txt.

What it does

A member writes !timer with a length in seconds, minutes or hours (90s, 5m, 1.5h, up to 24 hours) and what it is for. The bot confirms in the room and says so again when the time is up. !timers lists the ones running.

  1. !timer 5m Coffee
  2. timer bot
  3. 5 minutes
  4. ⏰ Coffee

The key it needs

Rights subscribe and client_events on the room prefix: it may join the rooms and speak in them, and nothing else.

New API key, filled in for the timer bot dashboard.pikoman.se

Set up

The docs cover the key and connecting; everything about the bot itself is on this page.

  • The Pro plan. A key that joins channels is a bot’s key, and bot keys come with Pro.
  • The key above. In the dashboard: your app, New API key, filled in as shown. How each choice works: Keys and rights. The secret, sk_k_….…, is shown once (what it looks like).
  • Your app id and the secret in .env, copied from .env.example. Nowhere else: not in a page, not in git.
  • Connecting. The bot signs its own join tokens with the key, and Pikoman shows it as a bot: bots in presence channels.
  • Your members join with tokens your backend signs, with their name and user id in the member data, {"user_id": "42", "name": "Ada"}: the token endpoint.

How it works

  1. It reads the length

A number and s, m or h; anything else, or more than a day, gets a line on how to write it.

  2. It keeps a few per person

Five running timers per user id at most, from the signed member data, so nobody fills the room with them.

  3. It rings in the room

When the time is up, a line with the name of whoever set it. The time is the bot’s own, so a closed tab does not stop it.

Run it

Node 22 or later
# unpack timer-bot.zip, then in the folder:
npm install
cp .env.example .env # fill in PIKOMAN_APP and PIKOMAN_API_KEY
npm start
Or Python 3.10 or later
python -m venv .venv && . .venv/bin/activate    # Windows: .venv\Scripts\activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
python timer.py

Timers live in the bot’s memory: a restart forgets them.

Ideas to take it further

  • Keep timers in a file, so a restart does not forget them.
  • !timer cancel, and a warning a minute before.
  • Send the reminder to the one who set it alone, with sendTo.

We are rebuilding the dashboard
