Milestones
“Message 5000 in this room! Ada sent it.” The bot counts each room’s messages, says who sent the milestone, and the pages burst into confetti.
Works today With @pikoman/ws 1.0.0-rc.10 from npm and Pikoman as it runs now.
A folder that runs as it is, in Node and Python: milestones.mjs, milestones.py, .env.example, README.md, confetti.js, package.json, pikoman_bot.py, requirements.txt.
What it does
It counts the members’ chat messages in each room, its own and other bots’ never. At 1 000, 5 000, 10 000, 25 000, 50 000 and 100 000 (or the numbers you set) it says so in the room, with the sender’s name from the member data your backend signed, and sends client-milestone, which confetti.js turns into a short burst on every member’s page.
- members
- milestones bot
- message 5000!
- confetti
The key it needs
Rights subscribe and client_events on the room prefix: it may join the rooms and speak in them, and nothing else.
- Start from
- Chosen: Bot
- Name
- Milestones bot
- Rights
- Not chosen:
publishNot chosen:statsNot chosen:clientsNot chosen:disconnectNot chosen:disconnect_allChosen:subscribeChosen:client_eventsNot chosen:kickNot chosen:ban - Channel kinds
- Not chosen: public Not chosen: private Chosen: presence
- Channels
- Chosen: Only some channelsprefix
presence-chat- - Addresses
- Chosen: Only these addressesthe server the bot runs on
- Expires
- Never, or in 90 days for a trial
Set up
The docs cover the key and connecting; everything about the bot itself is on this page.
- The Pro plan. A key that joins channels is a bot’s key, and bot keys come with Pro.
- The key above. In the dashboard: your app, New API key, filled in as shown. How each choice works: Keys and rights. The secret,
sk_k_….…, is shown once (what it looks like). - Your app id and the secret in
.env, copied from.env.example. Nowhere else: not in a page, not in git. - Connecting. The bot signs its own join tokens with the key, and Pikoman shows it as a bot: bots in presence channels.
- Your members join with tokens your backend signs, with their name and user id in the member data,
{"user_id": "42", "name": "Ada"}: the token endpoint.
How it works
It counts each room
One count per room, from 0 when the bot starts: every
client-messagefrom a member that the server does not list as a bot.It knows who sent it
room.getMember(from)is the member data your backend signed into that member’s join token. A message that says{"name": "Bo"}changes nothing: the name comes from the token. It celebrates once
At a milestone it sends the line for the chat and
client-milestonewith the count, the name and the user id. Exactly one celebration per milestone and room. The pages throw confetti
confetti.jslistens forclient-milestonefrom a bot only, and plays 60 pieces with the Web Animations API: no library, nothing that moves the page. Visitors who ask for less motion get the line in the chat and no animation.

Ideas to take it further
- Keep the counts in a file, so a restart does not start over at 0.
- Thank the sender alone as well, with
sendTo. - Celebrate the room’s first message of the day, or its busiest hour.
- Show the total on every page too: the live counter.
