Hello bot

The smallest bot there is: it joins a chat room with its own key and answers !ping with pong. Twenty lines, and everything a bigger bot does starts here.

Works today With @pikoman/ws 1.0.0-rc.10 from npm and Pikoman as it runs now.

Download hello-bot.zip

A folder that runs as it is, in Node and Python: hello.mjs, hello.py, .env.example, README.md, package.json, pikoman_bot.py, requirements.txt.

What it does

Someone in the room writes !ping; the bot answers pong in the room. Pikoman shows the bot as a bot, next to its key, so the pages can tell its answer from a person’s. Set REPLY_ALONE=1 and only the one who asked gets the answer.

  1. member: !ping
  2. hello bot
  3. room: pong

The key it needs

Rights subscribe and client_events on the room prefix: it may join the rooms and speak in them, and nothing else.

New API key, filled in for the hello bot dashboard.pikoman.se

Set up

The docs cover the key and connecting; everything about the bot itself is on this page.

  • The Pro plan. A key that joins channels is a bot’s key, and bot keys come with Pro.
  • The key above. In the dashboard: your app, New API key, filled in as shown. How each choice works: Keys and rights. The secret, sk_k_….…, is shown once (what it looks like).
  • Your app id and the secret in .env, copied from .env.example. Nowhere else: not in a page, not in git.
  • Connecting. The bot signs its own join tokens with the key, and Pikoman shows it as a bot: bots in presence channels.

How it works

  1. It connects with its app id

new Pikoman(PIKOMAN_APP) opens one websocket. The bot is one connection of your plan, however many rooms it joins.

  2. It signs its own join token

OfflineAuthenticator.fromSecret(PIKOMAN_API_KEY, {name: "Hello"}, 3): the token’s header names the key, so Pikoman checks that key’s rights and lists the connection as a bot. Access 3 lets it speak, which needs client_events.

  3. It listens for chat messages

room.onClient("message", …) gets every client-message a member sends, with the sender’s connection id first. The bot never hears its own.

  4. It answers

room.send("message", {text: "pong"}) to the room; room.sendTo(from, …) to the one who asked. At most 10 client events a second per connection.

  5. It stops when the key goes

Delete the key in the dashboard and the connection is closed with 4403 within about 30 seconds: pikoman.revoked ends the program.

Run it

Node 22 or later
# unpack hello-bot.zip, then in the folder:
npm install
cp .env.example .env # fill in PIKOMAN_APP and PIKOMAN_API_KEY
npm start
Or Python 3.10 or later
python -m venv .venv && . .venv/bin/activate    # Windows: .venv\Scripts\activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
python hello.py

Ideas to take it further

  • Answer !help with what your other bots can do.
  • Answer in the members’ language: the translator shows how to ask a model.
  • Join every room with a prefix instead of one: list them with GET /channels, as the greeter does with FOLLOW=1.

We are rebuilding the dashboard

Self-service sign-up is closed while we do. Until the new dashboard is ready we set up apps by hand: write to us with a line about what you are building, and we will set up your app and get back to you.
